Three Muses – 2001

Creating Three Muses allowed me to honour the strong inspiration I felt in Bermuda and the dream that brought these lively figures to life. This painting is a tribute to the joy and positive energy that emerges when community and the celebration of life through dance come together.

Three Muses is a painting I created during my time in Bermuda when I was an artist in residence with the Masterworks Foundation. While working in the studio, I felt incredibly inspired by the energy and history that surrounded me. The atmosphere in the studio was so powerful that it sparked my creativity in unexpected ways.

One night, as I slept, I had a dream where joyful figures appeared to me. These figures were a mix of the everyday people I often paint and Spiritual Baptists. In my dream, they danced together, full of life and happiness. They symbolized the joy of dance and the deep connection that comes from being part of a community.

The dream was so vivid and full of positive energy that I knew I had to capture it on canvas. The “Three Muses” are a reflection of that dream—a blend of the everyday and the spiritual, united in celebration. Through this painting, I wanted to express the idea that dance and community can bring about a special kind of joy and spiritual connection.

Creating Three Muses was a way for me to honour the powerful inspiration I felt in Bermuda and the dream that brought these lively figures to life. The painting stands as a testament to the joy and positive energy that can come from the union of community and the celebration of life through dance.
