Rejoice – 1996

This painting draws its inspiration from the Trinidadian Spiritual Baptists a unique religion that combines Christian and African principles.

Rejoice finds its roots in the vibrant traditions of the Spiritual Baptists in Trinidad and Tobago. Their ceremonies centre around communal involvement, emphasizing unity and shared spiritual encounters.

Music holds a pivotal role in these gatherings, with participants passionately singing and engaging with drums and other instruments, fostering a profound spiritual bond. They are all rejoicing in the name of a a higher entity, their community comes from their sisters and from within.

This painting depicts a group of women singing psalms and enlivening their spirits.  The image represents love and hope and serves as a reminder the importance of community, belief and love.

Rejoice aims  to echo the profound spiritual depth of this pivotal moment while encapsulating the community’s essence of care and mutual support as they unite in their pursuit of a deeper connection with the divine.

The Spiritual Baptist faith, deeply intertwined with the Caribbean’s cultural and historical fabric, shapes the ceremonial fabric of these communities.
