Psalm – 1995

The Spiritual Baptists of Trinidad and Tobago inspired the painting  Psalm. Their ceremonies often involve the entire congregation, emphasizing communal participation. Their practices of worship hinges on a strong sense of community as well as shared spiritual experiences.

In Spiritual Baptist ceremonies, music takes centre stage. Participants energetically sing, accompanied by claps, drums, and other instruments.  This activity fosters a profound spiritual connection.

In this painting, devoted women guide a man’s soul through a baptism ceremony. This is a fundamental sacrament in their faith that symbolizes both purification and rebirth.  I imagine other community members gathering around singing from a psalm that captures this enticing moment.

My canvas resonates with the deep spiritual significance of this moment while capturing the essence of the community’s care and mutual support while they unite in their quest for a profound connection with God.

The Spiritual Baptists faith is deeply rooted in the Caribbean’s cultural and historical context, shapes this communities’ ceremonial practices.
