Moonlight Groove – 1997

In Moonlight Groove, I sought to capture the raw, primal energy that fills the pre-dawn hours of Jouvert. This painting is a celebration of the power of music, movement, and shared experience, depicting a moment where the lines between the individual and the collective fade away.

Moonlight Groove is a vivid reflection of my experiences in Trinidad during J’ouvert morning, capturing the electrifying atmosphere of this iconic celebration. This piece pays homage to the Blue Devils, a legendary Carnival band known for their striking blue body paint and their spirited dance through the pre-dawn streets. In this painting, I sought to encapsulate the essence of those early hours when participants gather in the cool darkness, their hearts beating in sync with the pulsating rhythms of soca music.

My scene is serene as my characters dance to grooves on the beach. The air buzzes with the energy of impending celebration. The music sets the tone for the day’s festivities, its infectious beats driving the participants into a state of joyful abandon. The Blue Devils, with their vibrant blue bodies and exaggerated movements, embody the spirit of freedom that defines Jouvert. As they dance, they become a living symbol of the unbridled joy and communal connection that this celebration inspires.

In Moonlight Groove, I aimed to convey the raw, primal energy that permeates the pre-dawn hours of Jouvert. The painting is a tribute to the power of music, movement, and shared experience, capturing a moment where the boundaries between the individual and the collective blur. A time when everyone becomes part of something greater than themselves. The thick, textured strokes and bold colors evoke the intensity of the moment, drawing the viewer into the heart of the celebration. Through this work, I hope to transport the viewer to that magical time and place, where the spirit of Carnival is felt in every beat of the drum and every step of the dance.
