I hear a Symphony – 1999

I Hear a Symphony painting captures the strength and unity of a community coming together to lift up one of their own in a time of need.  It shoes the determination of sisters coming to support one another.

I Hear a Symphony is inspired by a powerful scene from Alice Walker’s novel *The Color Purple.* In this scene, the main character, Celie, goes through a painful nervous breakdown. At her lowest point, her sisters, representing her community, come together to support her. They surround Celie with love, empathy, and strength, trying to heal her broken spirit. This moment of unity and compassion is what I aimed to capture in the painting.

The painting reflects the power of community and the importance of coming together to lift each other up in times of need. Celie’s sisters are not just there as individuals; they symbolize the collective strength that a supportive community can provide. Their presence is a source of comfort and healing, helping Celie face her inner struggles and find the strength to move forward.

Through I Hear a Symphony, I wanted to convey the deep sense of connection and support that is so vital in overcoming life’s challenges. The painting is a tribute to the power of love, empathy, and community, and how these forces can help us heal and grow. It’s a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we are not alone; there are always people who care and are willing to help us through. This piece celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the strength that comes from being part of a community that truly cares.
