Blue Girl -1999

This painting is one of a series of self portraits. I am always in my paintings, it’s hard to get away from myself. There was a time when I used my features for a lot of my paintings as I didn’t have any models.

Blue Girl, represents my alter ego.  She is how I saw myself so many years ago.  There is a certain confidence that she has that reflects how I felt back when I first created this work.

I started using blue paint during that time for a lot of my characters.  I was implying that the colour of ones’ skin doesn’t matter as we are human after all.  Of course that’s an optimistic perspective and it doesn’t honestly represent the fact that I love illustrating Black culture.  I have been drawing myself and my community for decades.
