Blue Drummer – 1999

With Blue Drummer I aim to honor the drummers who infuse so much life into the Caribbean, especially during Carnival. Their music is a vital part of the culture, leaving a lasting impact long after the celebrations end. This painting is a tribute to the power of rhythm and the deep connections it fosters among the people of the Caribbean.

In 1999, I had the incredible opportunity to be in Trinidad and Tobago during Carnival. This vibrant and energetic time was filled with music, dance, and celebration. While I was there, I exhibited my work, and as I created images for the show, I found myself deeply inspired by the drummers.

Carnival in the Caribbean is a time when music fills the air, and the rhythm of the drums is at the heart of it all. The drummers play a crucial role, their beats resonating through the streets and into the hearts of everyone around. Their rhythm speaks to the very souls and spirits of the people, bringing everyone together in a shared experience of joy and unity.

This experience inspired me to create a piece that serves as an ode to the drummers of the Caribbean. Their music is more than just sound; it’s a powerful force that connects people to their roots, their culture, and each other. The drummers’ rhythms are a reflection of the vibrant and resilient spirit of the Caribbean, and I wanted to capture that in my work.

Through this piece, Blue Drummer I hope to honour the drummers who bring so much life to the Caribbean, especially during Carnival. Their music is a vital part of the culture, and it’s something that stays with you long after the celebrations are over. This painting is a tribute to the power of rhythm and the deep connection it creates among the people of the Caribbean.
