A Love Supreme is deeply inspired by the Spiritual Baptists of Trinidad and Tobago. The painting draws its title from John Coltrane’s iconic song, where the repeated chant of “A Love Supreme” forms a meditative mantra. This repetition resonated with me and felt like a fitting title for a piece that seeks to explore the idea of a supreme love, one that transcends the ordinary and touches the divine.
In this painting, I depict worshippers gathering in a state of spiritual ecstasy by the river. The water, a symbol of purity and renewal, plays a central role in this ritual. Participants are seen soaking in the cleansing waters, their faces lifted in reverence, as they connect with something greater than themselves. The river becomes a sacred space, where the physical act of bathing transforms into a spiritual experience.
The scene captures a moment of profound connection, not just between the individuals and the divine, but also among the worshippers themselves. The simplicity of the setting contrasts with the intensity of the emotions on display. The vibrant colors and dynamic composition reflect the powerful energy of the gathering, while the calm, flowing water offers a sense of peace and serenity.
Through A Love Supreme, I wanted to convey the idea that true love, in its highest form, is both a communal and spiritual experience. It’s about coming together, shedding the material world, and immersing oneself in the purity of the moment. This painting invites the viewer to feel the same sense of connection and transcendence that the worshippers experience, to step into the water and be part of the ritual. It’s a celebration of the power of faith, love, and the human spirit, all united in a supreme act of devotion.
