A Love Supreme – 1997

This painting draws its inspiration from the Trinidadian Spiritual Baptists a unique religion that combines Christian and African principles.

This painting,  A Love Supreme pays homage to John Coltrane’s masterful song of the same name.  In fact I recall painting to the screams of John Coltrane’s saxophone. My work as is true of many others, is inspired by the enduring influence of the Spiritual Baptists.  Their community connection and deep spiritual devotion have profoundly impacted my paintings over the years.

I’m continually struck by the immense influence communal faith holds in our lives; whether in God or the spiritual realm, it serves as a unifying force, bestowing the strength and conviction needed to persevere.

Within this artwork, a gathering of women harmonizes in song, elevating their spirits. The scene embodies love and hope, serving as a poignant testament to the significance of community, faith, and love.

In the image A love Supreme, I endeavour to mirror the profound spiritual essence of this significant moment while encapsulating the community’s core of nurturing care and collective support as they come together in pursuit of a deeper connection with the divine.

Spiritual Baptist faith, intricately woven into the Caribbean’s cultural and historical tapestry, intricately shapes the ceremonial practices within these communities.
